So I’ve heard this a few times recently (Stripped Documentary & Surviving Creativity Podcast) and it’s something I am trying to put into practice. When I first got excited about webcomics back in 2009 I worked my butt off to create these stories and worlds that I was passionate about. I wrote a business plan and printed books and even a few t-shirts (Webcomics Weekly Podcast said over and over not to do this but would I listen?) and tabled my first convention. I was serious about this being a business and being an indie startup. But I was getting WAY ahead of myself.

I think I just about broke even on the convention table (which is not bad) and it was fun meeting people who were genuinely interested in my work. There just weren’t that many of them. I now have a couple boxes of books being stored at my folks place that I am now too embarrassed by to ever sell! That’s because I’ve been keeping my head down for the last 5 years making things that excite me and pushing myself to improve my art and storytelling. I’ve made one other book which I am fairly proud of and I only printed up the pre-orders that came in so I learned my lesson. It is a tricky thing because you are told that you have to be an entrepreneur and be tenacious to get somewhere in this field but at the same time you need to be working on the right things to improve your art.

This pyramid explains how to make money from your creativity using the internet as a platform, be it art, music, film whatever. You can’t skip steps and the first rung of the ladder is not as easy as it sounds. If you love what you are doing and do it for the love of your art then you will most likely make it up this ladder. Most people who become successful talk about being a ten year overnight success. No-one sees all the blood, sweat and tears that go into making a success. They just hear about it when you reached the top and say oh, how did you get up there? This is how.
